I personally found many standard medications used to treat ADD and ADHD to actually increase my daughter's tics. Strattera and Adderall especially. When testing medications, doctors usually ask you to give it a few days to take effect. There were several occasions when I could not bear watching her go through the side-effects and stopped it after day 1. Wellbutrin was a medication that gave my daughter few (noticeable) side-effects. It helped some with concentration at school and it also calmed some of her tic-ing down--from time to time.
An interesting thing here, is that when we moved to the U.K. for a short period, the only form of Wellbutrin the U.K. doctor would prescribe was a liquid form. I had no idea that it was available in liquid form. The odd thing was, that it seemed to have a lot more 'kick' to it and was helping to calm the tics down a bit more than usual. When I mentioned this to the U.K. doctor he told me that he was very surprised to see that a nine year old was on Wellbutrin. Apparently in the U.K., it is prescribed to adults and used to help stop habits such as smoking (or so I was told at the time). When we returned to the U.S. our doctor searched, but could not find Wellbutrin oral in liquid form. We returned to Wellbutrin tablets and they were used up until she was 20 years old--when her tics went into a resting period.
At 19 years she began a natural treatment to help with her ADD and Anxiety. We found a combination of peppermint and wild orange essential oil to help "wake-up" and "calm" at the same time. She is very sensitive to scents, but she can handle peppermint and orange--and we found it in a chap-stick/lip balm, which makes it easy to use and carry with her --thankfully.
