Personally, I feel everyone should start with the Paleo diet and then check off food sources from here. The Paleo diet DOESN'T INCLUDE grains of any kind. It EXCLUDES simple carbohydrates as well, it also excludes beans/legumes (including soy..no soy allowed).
Basically, this is what is allowed: Meat (Organic or Grass Fed best), fresh or dried fruits, fresh vegetables, Sweet Potatoes and other complex carbs in moderation, nuts (not peanuts--it's really a legume), certain fats and oils. If you'd like to open your eyes to a whole new "Whole Foods World", I can recommend 2 sources to get started:
Nom Nom Paleo (Blog) Cave Women Don't Get Fat (Book)As my little girl was growing up, I noticed that an empty stomach could wreak havoc--especially if it happened in the car. I learned to keep the protein high (as it stayed with her longer) especially before journeys in the car -- and I would often keep beef jerky in the glove compartment for emergencies ;-) She has always loved a simply cooked chicken breast and broccoli, so it can be rather easy. She would choose fresh pineapple before any sweet as well.
