I never imagined seeing a police car parked in front of my home -- nor the ambulance I would follow to the mental hospital shortly thereafter. As they say, it just takes a spark to start a forest fire. Our psychiatrist urged me several times to consider a hospital stay for our daughter--who had been in quite an agitated and depressed state, but that was out of my realm of comprehension. Now, it was forced in front of my face, and knowing little about AMA (Against Medical Advice--term used to walk away from treatment) I signed the papers shoved in front of me and left with the most defeated feeling I had ever known as a mother.
Three hospital stays later, I found it curious that it all began with a cruel taunting from a middle school boy. A child with TS has so many challenges to just get through their exhausting days. When you add a bully to the mix, life can certainly get to a difficult place to manage. This experience gave me and our daughter's school staff the opportunity to look at accommodations in a much more creative way.
The first couple hours of a school day can really set the pace for attitude. Allowing my daughter to enter and depart through the back 'staff' door, and be greeted by kind adults was the beginning to better days.
Please share your experiences with life's little tormentors here.
